Think Before Getting Inked

How many times has your grown-up self looked back at your teen self and wondered, “What in the world was I thinking?” Fashion crimes, terrible dates, and hazy drunk nights eventually fade. Tattoos, however, usually remain for the long haul, so think carefully before getting inked. Hangovers fade, hair regrows, and wounds heal, but a tattoo can stay with you for years. Make sure you are considering the future, not only what seems exciting right now.

Your Partner Name

People break up and marriages fall apart, so having a partner’s name tattooed on your body can become a painful reminder of the past. It may seem sweet and romantic, but even if you believe someone is your soul mate, choose wedding bands or a backyard tree instead. Relationships can change, while tattoos remain. A permanent declaration may feel meaningful today but become awkward after the relationship ends. No matter how certain you feel, leave names off your skin.

Brands And Characters

Do not become a walking billboard by tattooing a company logo. Brands can disappoint you, go out of business, or create bad press, turning your tattoo into another regret. Chinese characters can be equally risky unless you know the language. You may end up with “sofa” or “pineapple” instead of “love” or “peace.” Never assume the tattoo artist or parlor has checked the meaning carefully. Supporting a brand with products is much safer than carrying its logo forever.

Fads And Faces

Pop culture tattoos rarely age well because every fad has an end. A favorite actor, band, song, or television show may mean something now but little in ten years. Face tattoos also require caution: portraits of loved ones can be beautiful, but detail and color may fade into a blotched image. Even a portrait of your child could embarrass them as they grow older. Proceed with caution, and remember that a tattoo should still make sense when the excitement has passed.
